Overview

This cultural tour explores the wonderfully diverse environment of Bhutan’s western valleys as well as their cultural heritage. Drive over high mountain passes and through rapidly changing vegetation from pine forests to hills covered in rhododendrons, magnolias and dwarf bamboo – abundant with birds and wildlife. The centrepiece to this tour is time spent exploring the beautiful Phobjikha Valley, winter home to the rare Black-Necked Crane. This tour also visits ancient fortresses, temples, monasteries, markets, farm houses and museums in Paro, Thimphu and Punakha. Highlights include the Ta Dzong Museum, Rimpong Dzong, the infamous Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), The National Memorial Chorten, 12th century Changangkha Temple, the National Library exhibiting ancient scriptures, Phobjikha Sanctuary and Punakha Dzong.

Day 1: Arrive Paro - Thimphu


  • Visit Memorial Chorten (Built in 1974 in loving memory of the Third King, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck)

  • Changangkha Lhakhang (Built in 13th Century by Lam Phajo Dugom Zhigpo)

  • Takin Reserve. (National animal of Bhutan)

  • Tashichho Dzong (The Fortress of the Glorious religion)

Day 2: Thimphu


  • Visit National Library established in 1960

  • Visit Institute of Zorig Chusum (Thirteen Traditinal Arts and Crafts)

  • Visit Textile Museum

  • Visit Handicraft Emporium

  • Visit Amazing Buddha Statue

  • Visit Bhutan Post Museum.

Day 3: Thimphu - Punakha


  • Visit Dochula Pass with the cluster of 108 interesting stupas built as a tribute to the selfless service and visionary leadership of our Fourth King

  • Village of Sopsokha- Chimi Lhakhang built by Lama Drukpa Kuenley

  • Halt Night at Punakha.

Day 4: Punakha - Bumthang


  • On the way, explore the Rich Flora and fauna.

  • Visit Trongsa Dzong ( One of the longest Dzongs in Bhutan)

Day 5: Bumthang


  • Jakar Dzong, the largest dzong in Bhutan.

  • Kurje Lhakhang , the final resting place of the remains of the First three kings of Bhutan.

  • Jampa Lhakhang, one of the 108 temples built by the Tibetan King Songtshen Gampo on a single day.

Day 6: Bumthang - Ura - Bumthang


  • Drive to Ura

  • Visit Ura Monastery.

  • Familiarize and tour within the Ura Village.

  • Night halt at Bumthang.

Day 7: Bumthang to Phobjikha.


  • Experience the Bird watching on the way.

  • Visit the Trongsa Museum.

Day 8: Phobjikha


  • Site seeing of Rich flora and fauna

  • Gangtoe Goenpa, the Nyingmapa school of Buddhism.

  • Phobjikha Valley, one of the most beautiful valley also known as marshland in Bhutan popular for its scenic splendor and culture uniqueness. It’s also famous for globally threatened Black-Necked Crane Grus nigricollis (usually seen during the winter season).

Day 9: Phobjikha to Punakha

  • Visit Flora and Fowna on the way back.

Day 10: Punakha.

  • Hike to the Khamsum Yueley Namgyel (Aprox- 40 mins hike) at Punakha.

  • Visit Punakha Dzong ( The Old Capital of Bhutan and also the Winter Residence of H.H the Je Khyenpo- Head of the Religious Body )

Day 11: Punakha to Paro

Day 12: Paro

  • Hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger Nest- cliff at 914m) Guru Rinpoche is said to have flown to the site of the monastery on the back of the tigress and meditated in the cave.

  • Visit the Ruins of the Drugyel Dzong built in 1946 to commemorate Bhutan’s victory over the Tibetan invaders

Day 13: Depart Paro
